A successful night out!

Last night was Eva's first night out. I took her to the house of my dear friends, along with one of my other dogs. I thought Eva would be nervous and scared, but I was wrong. She did great! She greated their chocolate lab, explored the house, went potty outside, then lay down for a nap. I wouldn't say she eagerly approached my friends, but she didn't run from them either. She allowed them to pet her, which set off just a few trembles. I was really impressed. She is growing into a confident little girl!

Here she is outside in the snow. It's been really cold, so outside time is limited. She, like the rest of us, will be happier when it warms up!

Stairs

One thing common to puppy mill dogs is their difficulty with stairs. Having spent their entire lives in cages, they haven't had the opportunity to learn such a basic skill. Once they are free of the mill and living in a home with stairs, some of them learn quite quickly how to go up and down, while others need work.

Eva needs work. She can go up 5 steps from the fenced yard into the house - I think cold, snowy weather is what motivates her to do this. However, she won't go down at all - although I can't blame her. It's freezing out there!!

So we are going to work on stairs...placing her on the bottom step and practicing getting off that one, repeat until comfortable, then place her on the step above, etc. Fortunately, we can do this inside! Of course, there is a possibility she may never do stairs comfortably. Good thing she's little and can be easily carried!

Hurdles

Day 4 with Eva, who is an absolute delight. One of the hurdles: fear of going into the fenced yard without me. She is pretty attached to one of my other Chin who always goes with her, but even so, she doesn't want to go outside to potty without me. One problem is having to go down 5 stairs. Even though she can climb up them, she still can't go down. Another problem is she hates to be picked up - her body stiffens, she arches her back and thrashes a bit. Once we get out the door, down the steps and into the yard, she is fine. She goes potty and wags her tail. She is always happiest when we all come back inside.

I look forward to the day when she can go outside to do her business with the other dogs, while I watch from inside, where it's warm!!

A good day

Well, turns out the pup didn't much care for "Blossom," but she thinks "Eva" is a pretty name. We are trying it out.

Today was a fabulous day. Eva achieved a few new things, the most notable of which was a walk on the leash! I was very pleasantly surprised. She was so resistant, then all of a sudden just started following the other dogs. Good girl!! She also managed the 5 snow-covered stairs from the fenced yard to the house. And, she stayed alone in the kitchen (with the other dogs and cats) for an hour or so while I went out.

What I've learned about her: she LOVES to eat!

She just came over to me for a little petting and tail wagging - still shaking but perhaps a little less so. She is a little love.

Day 2 with my foster

The first night went well - the new pup slept all night long on the dog bed with a few other dogs. It's always nice not to have to get up in the middle of the night to do potty duty!

I may have a name: Blossom. I will use it today to see how it feels and how she likes it.

A little more about her: she is 5 years old and was in a large commercial breeding facility for most of her young life. Since obtaining her freedom she has been in a "halfway house" where she got spayed, vetted and properly cared for. From there she went into her first foster home where she learned what it was like to live in a loving home with other dogs, cats, children and adults. Now that she is with me, we will work on fine-tuning the skills she began learning in her previous foster home, such as socialization, leash walking, using stairs, riding in the car - things that will help her be a well-adjusted dog. The ultimate goal: find her a home where she will be loved, adored and pampered for the rest of her life.

My new foster

Today I got a new foster dog. Her name currently is "Be Mine" but we are going to change it. We just haven't picked out a new name yet.

This is the 3rd dog I've fostered for Luvachin Rescue. My previous foster dogs were adopted by wonderful, loving families. It was a very rewarding feeling. I have the same hopes for this one.

Every foster is different. My first foster was young, confident and inquisitive. Since she had been in the commercial breeding world for 2 or so years, she wasn't as damaged as some. My 2nd foster was much more shy and tentative about the world; she was 5 and had been in a commercial breeding facility for a longer period of time.

This foster girl is even more shy than my previous pup. She wags her tail and wants to be loved, but she shakes like a leaf when she is pet. Holding her isn't even an option at this point - she is too afraid. We have spent the day together in the kitchen, with my other 2 Chin, 2 or 3 cats and 2 labs. She does great with the dogs and cats; it's people of whom she is most afraid. I look forward to helping her develop into a secure, happy dog.

Chin climb Mt. Washington!

We don't know for sure, but we believe Jen and Mel are the first Chin to reach the summit of Mt. Washington.

Did they climb the whole way?

Were they carried part way?

Were they really the first?

We don't know all the details - they are keeping pretty mum on the subject - but they sure look proud of themselves!

Sia and her ducky

Meet Sia!

Sia entered rescue as a breeder release looking for the perfect retirement home. After just a few weeks in foster care, she has begun to settle in and her true personality is starting to show.

Sia’s foster momma says she really is darling – a sweetie who just loves to be with people. She loves to cuddle and gives lots of kisses. She is very curious and smart, has learned her name and is learning some commands. She has also learned how to go up and down all the stairs around the house, which is a challenge for a girl not used to multi level living. She watched the other dogs and didn't want to be left out of playtime, so she had to follow them!

Sia got her own toy last week and it's as if she knows it is just for her. She carries her little yellow duck everywhere with her, even when she's chasing another toy. She even carries it outside when she goes potty!

Brave little Dexter

Dexter is a 3-month-old little puppy. Described by his foster mom as a strong-willed little boy with a big personality, he has experienced health problems no puppy should have to experience.

Initially he was diagnosed with pneumonia, made several visits to the vet and was treated with antibiotics. The vet bills started to mount, the antibiotics proved futile and Dexter wasn't improving. He was having trouble breathing; his foster mom was worried he wouldn't make it. One of his doctors agreed to do surgery, but how would he respond to the anesthesia? And of course, it would be expensive; it already was.

That's when a fundraising account was started for Dexter. Through the generosity and compassion of many people, money was raised to help offset the veterinary expenses!! Luv-a-Chin Rescue has so many people to thank. And no one thanks you more than Dexter and his foster moms.

Dexter had surgery yesterday; it turned out he had stenotic nares - narrow nasal passages. He came through the surgery wonderfully, and though he's not out of the woods yet, we have high hopes that he will live a long, happy life.

We'll keep you updated on little Dexter's recovery. And thank you - to everyone who sent healing thoughts and prayers, and for the financial support. Luv-a-Chin Rescue couldn't do what we do without you!

Pit Rescue of the Great Plains Hosts Dog Days of Summer Rally to Rescue Event

SIOUX FALLS, SD - (July 28, 2008) Imagine being greeted each day with animation and enthusiasm. Whether it’s a lick on the face or a wagging tail, dogs have a way of brightening our days. Unfortunately not every dog is lucky enough to have a home. Many dogs are abandoned, abused, or otherwise surrendered by the families that can no longer care for them. Rescue Organizations strive to find new, loving homes for these pets so they can once again become a member of a caring family.
Pit Rescue of the Great Plains , an Ambassador for the Purina® Pro Plan® Rally to Rescue™ program, is hosting a Dog Days of Summer Rally to Rescue event, on Saturday, August 9, 2008 at the Sioux Falls Petsmart Store, to raise funds and awareness for pet rescue and help local homeless dogs find permanent homes.
“Most people do not realize the number of dog rescue organizations located here in southeastern South Dakota ”, says Darci Adams, President Pit Rescue of the Great Plains and rally event coordinator. “Events like this enable all of us to continue to make a difference and save hundreds of dogs.”
Nationally smaller dog rescue organizations like Pit Rescue of the Great Plains help place nearly half a million dogs and cats in homes each year, and represent nearly 45% of all pet adoption agencies. However they are often overlooked by potential donors due to more limited fundraising and marketing capabilities.
The Dog Days of Summer Rally to Rescue Event is designed to raise awareness for pet rescue organizations in the area. On August 9th at Petsmart in Sioux Falls Pit Rescue of the Great Plains will be joined by groups including: Almost Home Canine Rescue, Dakota Dachshund, Luv A Chin, New Beginnings Shih Tzu Rescue, Second Chance Rescue Center, Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, Sioux Falls Animal Control, South D akota Boxer, Therapy Dogs International SE Chapter, Animal Farm Foundation and Pit Bull Rescue Central.
Dog lovers can meet rescue dogs, learn how to volunteer for these organizations and show their support for animal rescue. By making a $15 donation to any of the groups listed above they will receive a FREE Rescue T-shirt with the classic quotation from Mahatma Gandhi - The character of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated. Other activities include raffle packages for dog lovers only, obedience demos by Lydia and friends at 10 AM, 12 PM and 2 PM in the PETSMART training room pet contests include the Summer's Hottest Dog at 11 AM, the Owner/Dog Look-a-Like Contest at 1 PM, the Most Amazing Pet Trick at 3 PM and the Best Kisser Contest at 4 PM. Puppies and Auctions and Chin, Oh My!

First of all, your Friendly Luv-A-Chin Blogmaster apologizes for not posting sooner. It seems that housetraining 15 foster Chin at once is not as easy as you would think. Who knew???

Anyway, for those of you that have been waiting by their computers with baited breath, let me give you a brief synopsis of what has occurred in the past few weeks.......

There were two auctions attended by the great and powerful FOC, resulting in another 30+ Chinsters who will soon be on their way to wonderful, loving forever homes. Auction season seems to be over, so we should all breathe a collective sigh of relief. Ready, SIGH.......

Also, a few of the pregnant girls coming out of the auctions have had their pups. The pups are of course adorable and everyone is doing great!

Chinsters Hit the Empire State

What's big, white, has 92 legs and sends a shiver up the spine of "rescue husbands" everywhere? Why it's your friendly Blog Master in her F350 van barreling down the highway towards NY with 23 Chinsters in tow of course!

That's right boys and girls, on Wednesday June 3rd, your friendly Blog Master met up with the great and powerful head FOC and picked up 23 Chin headed for foster and adoptive homes in NY and beyond! It was a monumental occasion complete with the OSU marching band and a tickertape parade through the thoroughfares of the Midway Mall. It was very exciting!

More Auction Saves!

On 5/17 and 5/24, the FOCs were able to rescue another 28 Chin from auctions in Ponca City and Chouteau, OK. This brings the total number of Chinsters pulled from auctions to 3,000 year to date. Sioux Falls Soiree!!

The FOCs Strike Again!

As the number of Chin removed from the puppymills this year alone approaches the century mark, we are seeking donations of lunch size brown paper bags. It seems our fearless leader has recently become prone to bouts of hyperventilation!

Hey East Coasters!!!!

Has this ever happened to you?

It's February of 2000 and you happen to be watching "Breed All About It" on Animal Planet. The topic of the day...Japanese Chin. Since you live in the Chinless northeast, you have never seen a Chin in person but you are intrigued. The family featured has about 20 of these adorable little dogs all living in harmony! But you live in town and are already at the 4 dog limit so the information is filed in the back of your mind along with your husbands social security number and your high school GPA.

Then it's 2004 and you are at your son's soccer game on a chilly fall morning. You see a fellow parent with two adorable little dogs. You know immediately that they are the fabled Japanese Chin! They are sweet, sooooo cute and even try to get into the car with you when you leave. But you've just recently had a baby and she is a handful. Not the right time to add a new canine family member.

Flash forward to 2007. Your trouble making youngest daughter is older and things are starting to settle down. You decide that now might be the right time to add a small dog to the mix. You go to one of those handy "Find the Right Breed for You" websites. You type in "must be good with children" and "must get along with other pets". What pops up at the top of the list? Japanese Chin! At this point you think that the universe may be trying to tell you something so you do some digging around. You do a search on Petfinder and find a wonderful older Chin but she is in South Dakota. What to do? You bookmark her page and look at her everyday until you finally can't take it anymore. You finally inquire about her just to save your sanity and the rest is history!

Now, it may not have happened exactly like that but I know you have been bitten by the Chin bug. It may seem like our friends in the midwest are hogging all these wonderful Chinsters, but if you are thinking about adding a Chin (or a 2nd, 3rd or 4th!) to your family take the plunge and apply! Luv-A-Chin is fully committed to placing the Chin in our care in wonderful, loving homes regardless of geographical location. We will work with you to get the dog of your dreams to you either by air or ground transportation. If you adopt them, they will come!

Bette's Story

When Bette was saved from the Colgate, OK auction on March 15th, her rescuer knew immediately that there was something very wrong with her physically. Aside from a serious overbite, Bette was unable to run and play as a 5 month old pup should. Upon further examination, it was discovered that Bette had severely luxating patellas. In fact, it was so severe that her left kneecap was on the outside of her leg.

On Monday, April 14th, Bette underwent a difficult surgery to repair her more profoundly affected left knee. In 2-3 weeks, she will return to have her right knee repaired. At last report, despite having just come out of surgery and being in a great deal of discomfort, this little girl was handing out kisses and wagging her tail. Bette has a very long road ahead of her but it doesn't seem to have dampened her wonderful Chin personality!

We will continue to keep you updated on her progress!

A Baker's Dozen!

On 4/10/08, one of our dedicated FOCs received word that 13 Chin had been entered at the last minute in an auction in Chouteau, OK. She hopped in her car, driving 9 hours, to arrive at the auction just in the nick of time. We are happy to report that all 13 Chin have been successfully rescued!

This brings the total number of Chin removed from the puppy mill breeding cycle by Luv-A-Chin to 56! We are thrilled at this accomplishment and forever grateful to our friends who attend these auctions and make this all possible!

Puppies have arrived!

Among the Chin rescued from the recent auctions, was a very pregnant girl named Venys. On April 9th, after an emergency C-section, Venys presented her 4 bouncing baby Chin to the Luv-A-Chin family.

Auction Kids Update

On Friday April 4th, the first of the auction Chin made their way from temporary foster care to Luv-A-Chin foster homes in the Sioux Falls, SD area. Mick, Mack, Brewster and Yukki are absolutely adorable, fully vetted and reportedly being perfect gentlemen and wonderful houseguests! Applications are currently being accepted for these 4 Chin boys.

The remaining Chin rescued from the auctions are still in temporary foster care while we continue to work on getting everyone vetted. They are also doing great and will be listed soon!

A Dog's Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

Welcome Spring!

And welcome 13 additional Chin to the Luv-A-Chin family! On 3/21 and 3/22, another kind FOC (Friend of Chin) was able to rescue 13 lucky Chin from auctions in Choteau and Lehigh, Oklahoma. These cuties are currently in the process of being fully vetted and pre-spoiled by their foster Moms and Dads.

23 Lucky Little Chin!

Saturday March 15th was like any ordinary day in Colgate, Oklahoma but the events of that day would change the lives of 23 lucky little Chin forever! A very kind FOC (Friend of Chin) decided to attend a dog auction with the hopes of saving a few of these lovely dogs from a life of endless breeding and awful living conditions. She was successful beyond all of her expectations. When all was said and done this wonderful FOC had rescued 23 Chin!!! Luv-A-Chin is currently in the process of getting all of these girls and boys fully vetted, spayed and neutered and placed in foster homes where they will learn the fine art of being treated like royalty. After all that is a Chin's job!!!
